Overview

Arkesel is a cloud communications platform providing SMS, Email Marketing, Voice, OTP, and USSD APIs to businesses across Africa. As an Associate Software Engineer (Nov 2023 – Oct 2024), I worked full-stack across the platform's API infrastructure and customer-facing dashboard, as part of a six-person engineering team.

What I worked on

Built and maintained full-stack features in Laravel/PHP across both the API layer and the customer-facing dashboard
Designed and managed MySQL database schemas supporting high-volume messaging workflows, with a focus on query optimisation for reliability and performance at scale
Developed frontend interfaces and WordPress-based web experiences for product and marketing surfaces, ensuring responsive design
Contributed to API integration tooling and technical documentation used by thousands of third-party developers integrating against the platform

Why it's relevant

Working across five communication channels (SMS, Email, Voice, OTP, USSD) at production scale gave me direct experience with the kind of high-throughput, data-integrity-sensitive systems that underpin cloud security and data engineering work — the same instincts about schema design, query performance, and API reliability carry over directly.
